Air Force Has Strong Showing at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Highlighted by four top-20 finishes, the Air Force cross country team had a strong showing at the 64th annual Aztec Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 13, in San Diego, Calif. Seniors Matt Williams and Sean Houseworth paced the men to a fourth-place finish, while juniors Brittany Morreale and Katie Lynch guided the women to a seventh-place finish.
The men finished fourth with 133 points, while the women collected 225 points for the seventh-place team finish.
In his season debut, Williams crossed the finish line in 25:03 to place seventh in the field of 162. Williams' team captain counterpart, Sean Houseworth, picked up a 10th-place finish with a time of 25:13 in his first meet of the young season.
Crossing the finish line in 25:41, junior Zach Nordahl finished 25th. Seniors Daniel Castle and Kyle Jones rounded out the scoring for the Falcons, tallying respective 55th (26:16) and 58th (26:18) finishes.
Four other Falcons also competed at the Aztec Invitational. Sophomore Justin Tyner placed 66th with a time of 26:30, while senior Jason Mason clocked a time of 26:36 to finish 73rd. Classmate Scott Balcao finished 79th in 26:44, while freshman James Walmsley clocked a time of 26:53 to finish 89th.
Morreale and Lynch paced the women's team with a pair of top-20 finishes. In her season debut, Morreale clocked a time of 18:23 to finish 14th in the field of 161. Her career-best 5K time is the third-best in the Mountain West Conference to date. Lynch posted a time of 18:28 - the fourth-best time in the MWC - to finish 16th.
Fellow junior Ally Romanko placed 56th with a time of 19:03, while freshman Auriele Fain clocked a time of 19:07 to place 60th. Fellow freshman Meghan Prinkey rounded out the scoring runners, clocking a time of 19:34 to finish 81st.
The Falcons are off from competition until Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Boulder, Colo., for the annual Rocky Mountain Shootout.
