Falcons Sweep Air Force Open

    The Air Force men and women's cross country teams swept their own Air Force Open, Aug. 30 at Jack's Valley. Both teams scored 15 points each to out distance the men (50 points) and women's (49 points) teams from Denver University.

    With excellent weather conditions prevailing, the Air Force men finished in the top 25 with only one unattached runner (Knut Nystad) finishing 12th among 24 Falcons. Ben Payne was the Falcons' first-place leader with a time of 22 minutes, 12 seconds. Abe Wengel (22:12), Lalib Wilkinson (22:30), Mark Walter (22:34), Brian Dumm (22:45), Nick Wilson (22:50) and Jeff Gosselin (22:54) followed in the next top six positions.

    The Air Force women took the top 13 positions, with only one DU runner Dru Weaver (19:58) finishing seventh among 12 Falcons. Brandess Pardue was the first-place finisher for Air Force with a time of 19:12. Elissa Ballas (19:13), Anne Chumlea (19:29), Kelly McPherson (19:34), Nichole Graham (19:40) and Lindsay Grose (19:50) followed in the top six positions.

    This was the first race for the Falcons' freshmen group of Wilkinson, Walter, Wilson, Gosselin, Graham and Grose.

    "I'm very pleased with the freshmen," head coach Mark Stanforth said. "Four of our freshmen men finished in the top seven and five women finished in the top 11."

    Andrea Pinchak from Gates Mills, Ohio finished eighth (20:02), Vivien Aspden from Yucaipa, Calif., finished 10th (20:19) and Maija Rohde from Fallbrook, Calif., finished 12th with a time of 20:31. Wilkinson is from Huntersville, N.C., Walter is from League City, Texas, and Wilson is from Jacksonville, Fla., while Gosselin hales from Cornelius, N.S. and Graham and Grose are from Blue Springs, Mo., and Mission Viejo, Calif., respectively.
