75 cadet-athletes earn Mountain West all-academic honors

The 75 honorees is the third most since the Falcons joined the MW in 1999-2000

Personal-Best Times – 5000m: 14:27.72 | 3000m: 8:20.88

JUNIOR YEAR | 2015: Competed in four meets, including the conference championships...posted a personal-best 8K time of 24:38.2 at the Pre-National Invitational (148th)...crossed the finish line in 24:26.0 to finish 64th at the Washington Invitational...recorded a time of 29:13.1 at the Mountain West Championships (51st)...opened the season at the Colorado State Invitational, finishing 32nd in the 5K race (15:35.4)...academic all-conference selection.

SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2014: Participated in five meets, including the conference championships...opened the season with a 14th-place finish a the Fresno State Invitational...clocked a 6K time of 18:59.10 at that meet...recorded a career-best 8K time of 25:07.40 to finish 47th at the Mountain West Championships...finished 13th in the open section of the Pre-National Invitational (26:11.10)...also competed at the Rocky Mountain Shootout (26:58.40, 38th) and Woody Greeno Invitational (27:24.10, 26th)...academic all-conference selection.

FRESHMAN YEAR | 2013: Raced in three meets...opened the season with a 5K time of 16:31.40 at the Colorado State Open (75th)...clocked a season-best 8K time of 26:09.10 at the Fort Hays State Tiger Open (79th)...also competed at the Rocky Mountain Shootout, finishing 83rd in a time of 29:13.00.

HIGH SCHOOL: Santa Margarita Catholic High School...earned all-county track and field honors as a junior...five-time all-Trinity League first-team selection...holds school record in the 1600-meter run...five-time CIF qualifier...three-year captain for both the cross country and track and field teams...two-time MVP for cross country...named Santa Margarita Male Athlete of the Year...recorded personal-best times of 1:56.02 (800-meter run), 4:14.93 (1600-meter run) and 15:07 (three-mile run)...AP Scholar...member of the National Honor Society.

PERSONAL: Full name is Jason Peter Engel...nickname is “Gramps”...son of Matthew and Rebecca Engel...has one older brother, Evan...majoring in geospatial science...future plans include working in the intelligence or logistics fields, before opening a restaurant and running for President of the United States...served as Athletic Officer for squadron...named to the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s List...hobbies include people watching, standards, giving life advice, shuffleboard, golf, bingo, water aerobics, driving slowly, paddleboarding, going to the beach, Ornithology, amateur handwriting analysis, being smarter and better looking than Chandler Myers, knitting, yelling at the neighborhood kids to “get off my lawn”, being a good listener, sleeping, napping, repeating himself, asking teammates to speak up, turtle herding, volleyball, basketball (“I will cross up Zac Petrie in Clune Arena any day of the week”) and debating the complexity of our modern political system with Nikolai Rhodes...favorite holiday is Shark Week...completed a research program with NGA in St. Louis, Mo., and Washington, D.C., over the summer...also supervised range safety officers as a Training Flight Commander during Expeditionary Survival and Evasion Training (ESET) and spent leave in Southern California...would like to someday run across the United States to raise awareness about Veteran suicides and the Wounded Warrior Project...member of Cadet Squadron 05.

COACH COLE ON JASON: One of our three seniors on the team, Jason is mature beyond his years. Being able to embrace the role of a steady and solid contributor to our varsity group will enable Jason to play a key part on what has the potential to be a very good team. Combined with everything else he brings to the table as one of the mentors on the team, Jason becomes a very key part of our program.
