FRESHMAN YEAR | 2014: Participated in five meets, including the conference and regional championships...was the team’s top finisher at the Woody Greeno Invitational...placed fourth at that meet with a debut time of 26:18.40...clocked a career-best 8K time of 24:26.90 to finish 24th at the Mountain West Championships...also ran that distance at the Pre-National Invitational (26:01.30, 183rd)...clocked a five-mile time of 24:43.00 at the Notre Dame Invitational (121st)...finished 72nd at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships following a 10K time of 32:11.55...academic all-conference selection.
MAJOR TRACK AND FIELD HIGHLIGHTS: Set a Freshman Class Record at 5000 meters during the 2015 outdoor season...clocked a time of 14:22.70 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival to shatter the previous 23-year-old record by 11 seconds.
HIGH SCHOOL: Olentangy Liberty High School...two-time All-Ohio selection in cross country...also earned four all-state honors in track and field...named New Balance Nationals All-American in the 4xmile...earned academic all-state honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
PERSONAL: Full name is Andrew David Johnston...goes by Andy...son of Andy and Ann Johnston...both parents were born and raised in Scotland and came to the U.S. after they were married...has three siblings, Callum, Duncan and Mhairi...Callum is currently in nursing school, while Duncan and Mars both attend The Ohio State University...majoring in management...future plans include becoming a pilot, before eventually opening a candy company named after his sister, Mars...currently serving as squadron’s B-3 Element NCO...named to the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s List...member of the “500 Club” for recording a perfect score on the AFT...received Jump Wings in the summer of 2015...hobbies include giving relationship advice, conducting absurd science experiments that result in the perfect cup of coffee, wearing trucker hats, eating granola and philosophizing...would like to give a shout out to “my family and friends who are cool”...served as cadre during Expeditionary Survival and Evasion Training (ESET) over the summer...also completed Operation Air Force at Peterson AFB, Colo., under the supervision of 2Lt Riley Coates, and met soulmate while on leave in Columbus, Ohio...member of Cadet Squadron 12.
COACH COLE ON ANDY: Andy can be one of the top runners in our conference this year. A few bumps over the last few years have kept him from putting together the season he’s capable of having. We’ve made some adjustments to keep him in a good spot. If those adjustments are successful, Andy’s races this fall will also be very successful.
