COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Following her record-setting performance in the high jump last weekend, Air Force senior Rachel Herald was named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Herald is the program's first high jumper to ever earn the conference's weekly award.
Clearing 5'10½", Herald easily broke the previous Academy standard of 5'9¾" that Jennifer Petykowski had held since 1996 to win the 11-jumper event by over five inches. That mark, a career best by over three inches, also shattered the program's Senior Class Record of 5'7" that had stood since 1995 (Kristi Lowenthal).
After the first month of the season, the native of Rockford, Mich., currently leads the conference in that event and is ranked second in the NCAA. Herald's clearance, which occurred on her 22nd birthday, is only a quarter-inch off of the national leader.
Herald, who also claimed the Air Force Athlete of the Week award on Monday, is the seventh member of the women's program to earn the Mountain West's weekly award during an indoor season ... and the first since 2012. She shared the league's Dec. 17 honor with Wyoming's Mason Finley, who was the men's honoree.
