LONDON - Air Force volunteer coach Jenny Simpson finished 22nd in the semifinals of the 1500-meter run at the 2012 Olympic Games in London this afternoon (Aug. 8). Simpson, who trains at the Academy with head cross country coach Juli Benson, clocked a time of 4:06.89.
Simpson started on the inside of the second heat, after grabbing the final automatic spot from the preliminary round on Monday. She remained near the leaders of the second heat, which ran in a tight pack until the hitting the straightaway before the start of the bell lap. Significantly improving her time from the opening round, Simpson crossed the finish line in 4:06.89 to place 12th in her heat.
The top five finishers from each of the two heats, as well as the next two fastest times regardless of heat, will return to Olympic Stadium on Friday, Aug. 10.

LONDON - Jenny Simpson, a volunteer coach for the Air Force track and field team, advanced to the semifinals of the 1500-meter run the 2012 Olympic Games in London this morning, after earning the final automatic qualifying spot of her heat.
Clocking a time of 4:13.81, Simpson finished sixth in the second heat and 32nd overall in the 45-runner preliminary round. The top six finishers from each of the three heats, as well as the next six fastest runners regardless of heat, advanced to the 24-runner semifinal round. Running in 10th at the final turn, Simpson sprinted toward the finish line to capture the final automatic qualifying spot.
Simpson, the reigning world champion in the 1500-meter event who is coached by the Falcons' distance coach Juli Benson, returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 8, for the semifinal round at 7:45 p.m. in London (12:45 p.m., Mountain time).
