Paige Blackburn Named to USTFCCCA All-Academic Women's Team

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Senior Paige Blackburn was named to the 2011 Women's Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced this morning (Aug. 4). It is the second consecutive year that Blackburn, who holds a 3.43 GPA in civil engineering, has earned the USTFCCCA honor.
Blackburn, the Mountain West runner-up in the javelin throw, competed in both the javelin and discus at the 2011 NCAA West Preliminary Meet. After finishing 48th in the javelin (foul), Blackburn picked up a 24th-place finish in the discus (154'5").
During the season, she moved into second on the program's all-time list in the indoor shot put (48'5½"), third in the weight throw (56'1¾"), outdoor shot put (48'0") and discus throw (165'0"), as well as fifth in the hammer throw (170'0").
Blackburn, the women's MVP and recipient of the Gail Conway Performance award in 2011, was also a Capital One Academic All-District selection this season, as voted on by CoSIDA.
Blackburn was one of the record 663 total student-athletes from 172 institutions that earned All-Academic Team status.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Blackburn joins junior Jeremy Drenckhahn and sophomore Mike Lauritzen as members of the 2011 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, as the Drenckhahn and Lauritzen were named to the men's team yesterday (Aug. 3).
