NEW ORLEANS, La. - Rising sophomore Kobi Rex was named to the 2012 Division I All-Academic Men's Track and Field Team, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today (July 24).
Finishing his first year at the Academy with a 3.69 grade-point-average in management, Rex was one of 431 student-athletes from 148 institutions to earn All-Academic status from the USTFCCCA. He was also one of two service academy athletes to earn the league's academic distinction.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
In addition to a strong GPA, Rex was eligible for the All-Academic Team based on both the indoor and outdoor criteria. Rex, who became the program's first-ever conference champion in the high jump at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships in February, finished the indoor season ranked 41st in the national rankings with a career-best clearance of 7'0¼" (the third-best jump in Academy indoor history). An all-conference honoree at the MW Outdoor Championships, Rex recorded the fourth-best high bar mark in the program's outdoor history (6'11") to qualify to the West Preliminary of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he tied for 37th.
The women's all-academic selections will be announced by the USTFCCCA on Thursday, July 26.
