SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Rising senior Shelley Spires was the top collegiate finisher in the high jump this evening (June 23), as select members of the Air Force track and field team opened competition at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships under hot conditions at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento.
Spires entered the competition at the opening height of 5’10¾” and easily cleared the bar on her first attempt. She posted another first-attempt clearance at the 6’0¾” bar – a height that advanced only six jumpers from the initial 18-competitor field – and was one of just three jumpers to maintain a clean sheet through the first two jumps. Spires had three looks at a would-be personal-best clearance of 6’2”, but exited the competition at that bar. With her clearance of 6’0¾” – her second-best clearance of the outdoor season, Spires finished fifth overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the national field.
The Falcons continue competition in Sacramento tomorrow (June 24), when Spires’ classmate Jamiel Trimble runs in the first round of the 200-meter dash at 11:48 a.m. (PT) and Academy graduates Kyle Pater (Class of 2017) and Cale Simmons (Class of 2013) compete in the pole vault finals at noon.
