USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Several athletes with ties to the Air Force track and field program, including two members of the recent 2012 team, will travel to Eugene, Ore., for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, which began yesterday (June 21) at Historic Hayward Field.

The Falcons will be represented by two athletes in a pair of events at the Trials. Rising senior Cale Simmons and 2010 graduate Nick Frawley will compete in the pole vault, while 2012 graduate Paige Blackburn and 2006 graduate Dana Pounds-Lyon will compete in the javelin throw. The pole vault is scheduled to begin with the qualifying round on Monday, June 25, while the first round of competition for the javelin throw will be held on Friday, June 29.

Simmons and Frawley, who claimed Mountain West outdoor titles in 2012 and 2007, respectively, have combined for four All-America citations (outdoors). Blackburn, who will travel to Mexico the following week for the NACAC Under-23 Championships, is the 2012 Mountain West champion, while Pounds-Lyon, a two-time NCAA champion and three-time MW champion, will be competing in her third Olympic Trials.

All-American Justin Tyner, a 2011 Academy graduate who trains with cross country head coach Juli Benson, will compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase, which begins with the qualifying round on Monday, June 25. In addition, All-American Jim Walmsley, the 2012 Mountain West champion, has a provisional qualifying time in the steeplechase, but is currently awaiting word on a selection.

Former distance standout Sean Houseworth (Class of 2009) was a provisional qualifier for the 10,000-meter run, but suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month at the American Miler Series in Indianapolis and was forced to pull his name from consideration to the Trials.

In addition, volunteer coach Jenny Simpson, who trains at the Academy with Benson, will compete in the 1500-meter run at the Olympic Trials. Simpson, the reigning world champion at the 1500-meter distance, competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The Olympic Trials run from June 21-July 1 in Eugene. The top three finishers from each event who have met the Olympic "A" standard will be named to the team that will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
