USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Senior Annette Eichenberger was named the Air Force Academy's Most Valuable Female Athlete for the 2013-14 academic year during Academy's Individual Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 26. Eichenberger's award marks the second straight year that a member of the women's track and field program has earned the MVP award.
Highlighted by the program's first ever conference title in an indoor running event, Eichenberger is in the midst of a record-setting final season for the Falcons.
Eichenberger, who won the conference title in the 800-meter run at the 2014 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, set three Academy records during the indoor campaign. In addition to breaking the program's four-year-old record in the 800-meter run at the Iowa State Classic (2:06.53), she also clocked program-best times in the non-traditional 600-meter (1:31.56 at the New Mexico Team Invitational) and 1000-meter (2:51.19 at the Holiday Inn Invitational) events.
The success has continued during the outdoor season, as she clocked the program's fastest Division I time in the 800-meter run (2:04.52, second all-time) at the Drake Relays and posted the Academy's second-fastest overall time in the 1500-meter run (4:23.28) at the Stanford Invitational. Eichenberger, who posted top-25 regional times in both outdoor events, will focus on the 800-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (West Preliminary) later this week.
Her success wasn't just limited to the track, as Eichenberger also shined for the Falcons during the cross country season as the Falcons' team captain. She earned all-conference honors after finishing ninth among 86 runners at the 2013 Mountain West Cross Country Championships
Eichenberger is the seventh track and field athlete to earn the Most Valuable Female Athlete award, joining Jennifer Petykowski (1998), Ana-Maria Ortega (2001), Dana Pounds (2006), Olivia Korte (2007), Sara Neubauer (2010) and Jen Bremser (2013).
The Athletic Top-Six awards, selected by the senior members of the USAFA athletic department, are given to Air Force's top performers from across the Academy's 27 sports. The remaining Top-Six awards were Most Valuable Male Athlete (Kyle Westmoreland, golf), Athletic Excellence (Adam McKenzie, hockey) and Athletic Leadership (Devin Hightower, wrestling), Athletic Achievement (Erik Smith, lacrosse) and Scholar-Athlete (Rachel Kennedy, diving).
