Ten Falcons Earn All-Conference Honors
May 19, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ten members of the Air Force track and field team were honored with all-conference distinction, the league office announced this afternoon (May 19). Based on their top-three finishes at last week's Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Laramie, Wyo., eight men and two women earned all-MW honors.
The men swept the all-conference awards in the pole vault for the second straight year. Junior Joey Uhle picked up his first outdoor title and earned all-MW honors for the second straight year, while sophomore Dylan Bell and senior Cort Rogers completed the medal sweep by finishing second and third, respectively. It was the first outdoor all-MW honor for Bell and the second for Rogers, who also finished third at the 2012 championship meet.
Air Force earned a pair of all-MW awards in the high jump, as freshman Taylor Smith and senior Rachel Herald won conference titles in their respective fields. Smith earned the men's second outdoor conference title in the last three years and picked up the Academy's fifth outdoor all-MW award in the last three years, while Herald, who broke her own Academy record during her championship run, became the first Air Force female to earn all-league status in that event during the outdoor season.
The Falcons collected four additional all-conference honors from the field, backed by a pair of runner-up finishes from sophomore Grant Hamilton (shot put) and senior Kassie Gurnell (triple jump). Hamilton collected outdoor all-conference honors in the shot put for the second straight year, while Gurnell claimed her second outdoor all-MW triple jump accolade in the past three years. Sophomore Garrett Griffin (javelin throw) and junior Blue Kearney (long jump) each picked up their second outdoor all-conference award following third-place finishes in their respective events.
Sophomore Patrick Corona represented the Falcons on the track, as he picked up a third-place finish in the 1500-meter run. It is the first outdoor honor for Corona, who earned all-league status in the mile during at the indoor championship meet.
