The Air Force track and field team will conclude the regular season later this week, when it hosts its lone home meet of the outdoor season – the Air Force Twilight Open – on Friday, May 4. The meet, which will serve as the Falcons’ final tune-up before the conference championships, will be held at the Academy’s Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
The Air Force Twilight Open, the Falcons’ final home meet of the year, is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m., at the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex (a complete schedule of events is listed below). The hammer throw will take place on the Upper Field, while all other events will be held within the main venue. Admission and parking is free for the meet. A LOOK AT THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Highlighted by Shelley Spires holding the eighth-best high jump clearance in the NCAA at 6’0”, Air Force athletes are currently listed among the nation’s top 20 in seven events. Andrew Johnston is ranked 12th in the men’s 10,000-meter run (28:56.60), while Jaci Smith is ranked 16th in the women’s event with a time of 33:36.92. Tyler Koss is listed 17th in the 400-meter dash (45.80), while Carina Gillespie is listed 18th in the 1500-meter run (4:16.51) and Kathryn Tomczak is ranked 19th in the pole vault (13’9¼”). In addition, the Gillespie-anchored distance medley relay (Mahala Norris, Aubrey Ridgeway, Swathi Samuel) is listed 16th in the non-traditional event standings (11:24.47).
MEN FINISH SEASON RANKED 19TH IN DUAL MEET STANDINGS
Air Force moved up two spots to No. 19 in the May 1 edition of the Men’s Collegiate Dual Meet Rankings to finish the outdoor campaign with its highest placement of the season – and the highest ranking in the Mountain West.
WHAT’S ON DECK
Championship season begins next week, when the Falcons travel to Clovis, Calif., for the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day event, which begins on Wednesday, May 9, will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
