COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After crushing her own Academy record in the pole vault last weekend, Air Force sophomore Kathryn Tomczak was named the Mountain West Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week this afternoon (April 25). It is the second time during the outdoor season – and the fourth time in her career – that she has claimed the conference’s weekly award.
Tomczak cleared a career-best 13’9¾” in the pole vault at the Michael Johnson Invitational on Saturday, April 22, easily breaking her own program standard of 13’4” that she set in late March. Improving her height by nearly six inches, the sophomore matched the second-best clearance of the meet and was the youngest vaulter to finish in the top 10. Tomczak’s clearance, the 11th-best in the nation for competitions held over the April 21-22 weekend, is currently ranked second in the Mountain West, 12th in the West Region and 18th in the NCAA this season.
The Falcons return to action later this week, when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 108th Drake Relays. The three-day meet begins with the Distance Carnival on Thursday, April 27.
