COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force junior Cale Simmons was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (April 3). The Rocklin, Calif., native matched the Academy record on the pole vault last weekend at the 85th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Simmons finished third overall in the pole vault, clearing a program-record tying mark of 18'0½". With that height, which tied for the best clearance of the day at the Texas Relays, Simmons became the first Falcon since 2004 to clear the 18-foot bar in outdoor competition and now holds a share of both the indoor and outdoor Academy records. His vault, which is tied for the third-best mark in Mountain West history, currently ranks first in the conference and third in the nation.
It is the third such award for Simmons, who claimed the honor twice during the 2011 season. He shared the April 3 Athlete of the Week honor with Whitney Gipson of TCU, who was named the women's athlete of the week.
Air Force opens the home portion of the outdoor season this weekend, when it hosts the AF Outdoor Combined Events Meet (April 5-6) and the Air Force Relays (April 7). Both competitions will be held at the newly-renovated Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
