USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - While the majority of the Air Force track and field team was in Arizona, two athletes competed in other meets over the March 22-23 weekend. Senior Brian Ford paced the pair of individual competitors with two career-best marks and event title at the Tom Benich Classic.
Competing in Greeley, Colo., on Friday, March 22, Ford won the hammer throw with a career-best distance of 198'2". Bettering the field by nearly 10 feet, Ford added over seven feet to his own standard and moved to third on the program's all-time list. He also debuted on the Academy's all-time list in the discus throw, as he tossed the fifth-best distance in program history (176'11") to finish third among collegiate competitors (fourth overall).
In addition, Brendon Birdsell competed in the discus throw at the UC Irvine Spring Beak Classic in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday, March 23. The senior recorded a mark of 145'5" to finish 14th in the 41-thrower field.
The Falcons return to action next weekend (March 29-30), as they split up for several meets. Select athletes will travel to the Texas Relays (Austin, Texas) and the Stanford Invitational (Palo Alto, Calif.), while others will compete at various meets around the country during the Academy's spring break.
