COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After posting NCAA-leading marks last weekend in their outdoor opener, senior Matt Dorsey and junior Shelley Spires were honored by the Mountain West this afternoon (March 21), Dorsey was named the MW Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week and Spires was selected as the MW Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Dorsey nabbed his first conference award after posting an NCAA-leading time of 3:46.50 to win the 1500-meter run at the Baldy Castillo Classic on March 17. Dorsey, who bettered the rest of the 46-runner field by more than a half-second, leads the conference by nearly six seconds. Dorsey also ran on the Falcons’ winning 4x800-meter relay squad, as he anchored the team to a third-fastest time in the nation this season (7:43.95).
Spires, who picked up her fifth MW award of the season and the seventh of her career, became the first Air Force female to ever break the six-foot mark in the outdoor high jump when she cleared 6’0½” to win the Baldy Castillo Classic on March 17. Breaking her own Academy record twice during the meet, Spires became the first – and only – jumper in the nation to surpass the six-foot bar this season. Three of her jumps were ranked among the nation’s best last weekend, including her clearances at 6’0½” (first), 5’11¼” (second, tie) and 5’10” (sixth, tie). In addition to holding the top overall placement on the conference and national rankings, Spires also debuted in third on the Mountain West’s all-time list.
The Falcons return to action later this week, when they begin their spring break training trip at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif., on March 24-25.
