The Air Force track and field team heads to Tempe, Ariz., this weekend (March 22-23) for the annual Arizona State Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium. The two-day meet begins on Friday, March 22, with the hammer throw, while the rest of the events will take place on Saturday, March 23.
Meet Notes 12: at Arizona State Invitational
The Arizona State Invitational will be held at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Track Stadium over the March 22-23 weekend. The hammer throw (women, followed by men) will take place at 1 p.m., on Friday, March 22, while the remaining events are scheduled for Saturday, March 23 (field events at 10 a.m., running events at 5:45 p.m.).
SATURDAY'S SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
10:00 a.m.: Women's Discus Throw, Men's Discus Throw; 3:00 p.m.: Women's Pole Vault, Men's Pole Vault; 3:00 p.m.: Men's Javelin Throw, Women's Javelin Throw; 3:00 p.m.: Long Jump; 5:00 p.m.: Women's High Jump, Men's High Jump; 5:00 p.m.: Women's Shot Put, Men's Shot Put; 5:45 p.m.: 100-/110-Meter Hurdles, 1500-Meter Run, 4x100-Meter Relay, 3000-Meter Steeplechase, 400-Meter Dash, 100-Meter Dash, 800-Meter Run, 400-Meter Hurdles, 200-Meter Dash, 5000-Meter Run, 4x400-Meter Relay; 6:00 p.m.: Triple Jump (women will compete first in all running events; the men's and women's triple jump will run simultaneously)

In addition, several athletes will be heading to various meets around the country during the Academy's spring break. A recap of those individual performances will be available on Monday.
FORD NAMED MW ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Brian Ford was named the Mountain West Athlete of the Week on March 19, after improving his distance in the hammer throw by over 20 feet (191'0") at the Jerry Quiller Classic. Ford, the conference leader after the first week of the season, was the top collegiate finisher in that event and debuted in sixth on the Academy's all-time list.
SOPHOMORE TRIO IMPACTS RECORD BOOK IN OUTDOOR OPENER
Three sophomores impacted the women's all-time standings during the season-opening Jerry Quiller Classic. Danielle Tabb recorded the fifth-best distance in Academy history to win the shot put (46'10¾"), while Morgan Malone won the 100-meter dash with the program's sixth-fastest time (12.35). In addition, Nikki Freeman moved into eighth on the all-time list in the javelin with a winning, career-best toss of 147'2"
SWEEP IT UP
Air Force claimed the men's and women's titles in the pole vault, triple jump and javelin throw at the Jerry Quiller Classic. Cort Rogers and Bizzy Mellado won the pole vault, while Kyle Gartrell and Kassie Gurnell took first in the triple jump. Tim Urista and Nikki Freeman rounded out the Falcons' first-place sweeps, as they claimed their respective titles in the javelin by an average of 15 feet.
DID YOU KNOW?
The women claimed first-place finishes in five of the seven field events contested at the Jerry Quiller Classic, including all three jump titles. Rachel Herald (high jump), Bizzy Mellado (pole vault) and Kassie Gurnell (triple jump) took first in the jumping events, while Danielle Tabb (shot put) and Nikki Freeman (javelin) added first-place finishes in the throws.
IT'S LOOKING A LITTLE BLUE AT THE TOP
Air Force claimed two of the top-three placements in the 200-meter dash at the season-opening meet at Colorado, as Jake Spuller and Uzor Udensi finished second and third, respectively. The Falcons also accounted for three of the top-five finishes in the 400-meter sprint at that meet. David Ptacek was the event's runner-up, while Josh Nielsen and Evan McDowell finished third and fifth, respectively.
DRENCKHAHN AWARDED NCAA POSTGRAD SCHOLARSHIP
Distance runner Jeremy Drenckhahn was named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for the 2012-13 fall sports (cross country) on March 18, becoming the eighth cross country/track athlete to earn that prestigious distinction.

HOME SWEET HOME
The Falcons will host four competitions at the Cadet Outdoor Track Complex. The squad will host its second-annual Outdoor Combined Events Meet and Air Force Relays over the April 4-6 weekend. The Falcons will also host New Mexico and Northern Colorado on April 12, before closing out the season with the Air Force Twilight Open on May 3.
WHAT'S ON DECK
Air Force will close out its spring break at a pair of competitions over the March 29-30 weekend. The squad will split for the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the Texas Relays in Austin.
