INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two members of the Air Force track and field team earned bids to next week’s NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, the national selection committee announced this evening (Feb. 27) with the release of its championship field. Senior Shelley Spires (high jump) and sophomore Michael Rhoads (800-meter run) will represent the Falcons in the “Sweet 16” of indoor track and field.
Spires, who is currently tied for seventh in the national high jump standings with a clearance of 6’0¾”, will be making her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The two-time Mountain West champion, who collected first-team All-America honors at last year’s NCAA meet, recorded her qualifying height at the Air Force Invitational in January and has surpassed the six-foot mark three times this year.
Rhoads qualified to his first national meet after clocking an Academy-record time of 1:48.22 (adjusted for altitude) during a runner-up performance at last week’s Mountain West Championships. With that time, the sophomore is currently listed 15th among the list of athletes declared into the NCAA Championships.
The top 16 athletes and top 12 relay teams in every event qualified to the national meet, which will be held at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M next weekend (March 9-10).
