COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second time in as many weeks, a member of the Air Force pole vault squad was named the Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week. Freshman Kimber Shealy (Kennesaw, Ga.) was selected as the conference's female athlete of the week, the league office announced today (Feb. 24). It is the first such honor for Shealy.
This award comes just one week after junior pole vaulter Nick Frawley claimed Air Force's first weekly award of the season.
At the Robert Shine Invitational on Feb. 20, Shealy won the pole vault with a career-best 12'6¼", leading an Air Force sweep of the top spots. A personal-best clearance by nearly a half-foot, moved the freshman from fourth to third on the program's all-time record book. It is the third-best clearance on the team this season and the fifth-best in the conference to date.
Shealy and the rest of the track and field team returns to the Academy this weekend (Feb. 26-28), as they host the 2009 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships.
