COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force senior thrower Paige Blackburn was named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (Tuesday, Feb. 21). The native of Soldotna, Alaska, had career-best performances in both throws at the Robert Shine Invitational.
In her final tune-up before the conference meet, Blackburn recorded career-best distances and improved her second-place standing in the program's record book in both the shot put and weight throw.
The senior became just the second Falcon to surpass the 50-foot mark in the shot put, tallying a 51'2¾" to improve her personal distance by over one foot and finish as the top collegiate in that event (second overall). That throw is currently ranked second in the Mountain West and 36th in the nation.
She also placed second in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 59'7¾". That toss is ranked among the top 10 in the conference this season.
Blackburn, who claimed her first weekly honor from the conference this week, shared the Mountain West's Feb. 21 honor with Wyoming's Ashley Hutchinson, while Colorado State's Trevor Brown earned the men's top athlete award.
Air Force returns to action this weekend (Feb. 23-25), when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the 2012 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships.
