Zach Perkins Clocks Academy Record to Advance at NCAAs
June 6, 2013
EUGENE, Ore. - With an Academy-record time of 3:41.46, Air Force sophomore Zach Perkins qualified to the finals of the 1500-meter run during the semifinal round of action at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, June 6, in Eugene, Ore.
Perkins, who finished third in his heat to earn an automatic berth into the finals, deleted nearly three seconds from his previous career-best time, while improving the Academy's two-year-old record by nearly one second.
From the start of the first semifinal heat, Perkins found a spot within the front half of the pack. He stayed along the rail as the field jockeyed for position and moved within qualifying distance at the bell. Running a 55.40 on the final lap, Perkins crossed the finish line in the third spot to secure his place in the final.
His time, just 0.25-seconds off of the overall lead, was third among all 24 runners in the semifinal event.
Action continues for Perkins on Saturday, June 8, when he returns to Historic Hayward Field for the finals of the 1500-meter run at 2:31 p.m. (PST).
