LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Air Force track and field team earned its first points of the 2014 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon (May 15), as junior Evan McDowell wrapped up competition in the decathlon. McDowell, who battled injury throughout the day, collected a career-best 6,508 points to take fourth.

Highlighted by a career-best throw in the javelin, McDowell finished second in the final two events to secure an overall score of 6,508 points - a personal improvement of exactly 100 points. With a toss of 160'3" on his opening attempt of the javelin, McDowell added over 30 feet to his own distance in that event. He also earned runner-up honors in the 1500-meter run, clocking a season-debut time of 4:52.96.

McDowell finished within the top half of the field in every event today, as he placed third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.47) and fourth in the pole vault (12'5½"). He also finished fourth in the discus throw behind a season-best mark of 113'10".

Wyoming's Kyle Sullivan won the decathlon title with 6,776 points, while New Mexico's Richard York and Colorado State's Justin Green finished second (6,592 points) and third (6,569 points), respectively. McDowell's 6,508 points was just 61 points behind the medalists, while the top four athletes separated themselves from the rest of the field by over 350 points, as Boise State's Roderick Townsend rounded out the top five with 6,153 points.

With the multi-events complete, action for the rest of the Air Force track and field team gets underway tomorrow (May 16) at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie. The women's hammer throw starts the day at 11:00 a.m., while the first running event - the women's steeplechase - begins at 1:00 p.m.
