LARAMIE, Wyo. - Junior Evan McDowell opened competition for the Air Force track and field team this afternoon (May 14) at the 2014 Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Laramie, Wyo. McDowell, the Falcons' lone competitor in the meet's multi-event competition, is currently fifth in the decathlon.
McDowell recorded one career-high and four season-best marks, en route to a first-day total of 3,422 points.
The junior's best finish of the day came in the last event, as he placed third in the 400-meter dash with a season-debut time of 52.57. McDowell added four feet to his career distance in the shot put (39'4½") to place fourth in that event, while finishing fifth in both the high jump (season-best 6'3¼") and 100-meter dash (11.38). He rounded out the opening half of his decathlon with a season-best distance of 20'1½" to take eighth in the long jump.
New Mexico's Richard York currently leads the decathlon with 3,798 points, while Boise State's Roderick Townsend and Wyoming's Kyle Sullivan are in second (3,686) and third (3,590), respectively. Colorado State's Justin Green is in fourth with 3,463 points and McDowell rounds out the top five with 3,422 points.
McDowell returns to the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex tomorrow afternoon for the final five events of the decathlon. Action begins for the men at 12:30 p.m., with the 110-meter hurdles.
