DES MOINES, Iowa - Highlighted by the third-fastest 5000-meter time in women's history, five members of the Air Force track and field team opened competition tonight (April 24) at the 105th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Running under the lights of Drake Stadium during the Distance Carnival, the Falcons also accounted for a pair of top-10 finishes.
By crossing the finish line in a time of 16:55.43, sophomore Hannah Everson became just the fourth member of the women's team to better the 17-minute mark in an outdoor 5000-meter run. In addition to clocking the third-fastest time in Academy history, Everson also shattered her own Sophomore Class Record in that event, subtracting 10 seconds from the previous record she set earlier this season at Stanford.
Classmate Dan Caddigan had a strong debut in the 10,000-meter run, finishing fourth in the 33-runner event - and second amongst collegiate runners - with a time of 30:09.86. Fellow sophomore Daniel Shellhouse also made his debut in the 10,000-meter run, clocking a time of 31:27.45.
A pair of Air Force seniors closed out the night in the men's 5000-meter run, with Gavin Owens taking seventh in his first outdoor race at that distance (14:22.40) and Isaiah Bragg finishing 13th (14:55.78).
The Falcons continue action at the Drake Relays tomorrow (April 25), with the preliminary heat of the 110-meter hurdles at 9:00 a.m. (CT). In addition, a distance medley relay quartet will compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., and the hammer throwers open competition at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., tomorrow afternoon.
