AZUSA, Calif. - Air Force junior Lesly Torres recorded the second-best heptathlon total in Academy history on Thursday, April 19, as she concluded the two-day Mt. SAC/California Invitational Combined Events Meet with a career-best 4,653 points.
In addition to improving her own career total by 221 points and finishing within the top half of the 33-competitor field (15th), Torres set a new Junior Class Record in the heptathlon, breaking the previous 2006 mark by 77 points. She also moved from fifth to second on the program's all-time list.
Competing in the "A" section of the California Heptathlon, Torres opened the day with a distance of 16'11½" in the long jump. After tossing a mark of 94'4" in the javelin throw, the junior crossed the finish line of the 800-meter run in a career-best time of 2:34.30.
Fellow junior Michael Tibbs was forced to withdraw from the decathlon due to injury.
Nine members of the Air Force distance team open competition at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays later this afternoon at Historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.
