Lesly Torres Sets Heptathlon High Jump Mark at California

AZUSA, Calif. - Highlighted by an Academy heptathlon event record in the high jump, Air Force junior Lesly Torres recorded a career-high first-day total of 2,954 points during the first day of action at the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Combined Events Meet in Azusa, Calif., on Wednesday, April 18. Classmate Michael Tibbs opened the decathlon with a career-best first-day total of 3,733 points.
After four events of the heptathlon, Torres tallied 2,954 points ... the best "first-day" total of her career by nearly 200 points. With that total, she sits in ninth of the 33-competitor event and qualified for the "A" section of tomorrow's final. Torres opened the day with a career-best matching time of 14.93 in the 100-meter hurdles, before clearing a season-best 5'5¼" to finish fourth in the high jump. She tossed a personal-best 31'1" in the shot put and closed out the first day of action with a wind-aided time of 25.95 in the 200-meter dash.
Torres' mark in the high jump (5'5¼") is an Academy heptathlon event record, breaking Brittany Edmonds' 2001 record of 5'5".
In the decathlon, Tibbs improved his "first day" total by nearly 200 points (3,733 points) to sit in sixth of the 18-competitor "A" section. Tibbs clocked a career-best time of 11.20 in the 100-meter dash to open action in the multi-event competition. After posting a career-best long jump distance of 23'1¼" to finish third, Tibbs matched his career-best distance in the shot put with a fourth-place throw of 41'9½". He cleared 6'0¾" during his first high jump event of the season, while closing out the day by shaving nearly two seconds off of his career-best time in the 400-meter dash (50.94).
Tibbs and Torres conclude action at the Mt. SAC/California Invitational Combined Events Meet tomorrow (April 19) beginning at 11 a.m. (PST), while nine members of the Falcons' distance team open competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., beginning at 2 p.m.
