BOULDER, Colo. - With just the javelin and hammer being contested during the opening day of the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder, Colo., members of the Air Force throwing team got the season off to a strong start, accounting for two event titles and making a pair of incursions to the program's all-time list.

Air Force easily swept the javelin titles, as junior Tim Urista and sophomore Nikki Freeman won their respective events by at least 15 feet, while senior Brian Ford debuted on the program's all-time list in the hammer throw.

Urista recorded a distance of 205'6" to lead the Falcons to a sweep of the top-three finishes in the men's field. Senior Paul Rishel made his collegiate debut with a second-place throw of 189'4¾", while junior Brad Hackert finished sixth with a toss of 156'4".

With a career-best distance of 147'2¾", Freeman led Air Force to four of the top-five placements in the women's event. Freeman, who won the event by 25 feet, moved into eighth on the program's all-time list with her winning throw. Junior Kim Smith finished second with a toss of 122'7¼", while classmate Alana Piccone and freshman Jacki French placed fourth (119'1") and fifth (115'5¼"), respectively.

Ford finished second among collegiate competitors in the hammer throw (fourth overall), improving his distance by over 20 feet to record a mark of 191'0½". With that throw, Ford debuted in sixth on the program's all-time list. Junior Jalen Fooster finished fifth overall, with a career-best distance of 185'3", while classmate William Kent added nearly 20 feet to his personal distance (176'10") to finish ninth.

On the women's side of the hammer throw competition, junior Becca Bauman finished fifth with a mark of 161'8½" - a distance just shy of her personal-best.

The rest of the squad heads to Potts Field tomorrow (Saturday, March 16) for the second day of competition at the Jerry Quiller Classic. All field events, as well as the running events, are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
