ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Air Force junior Lesly Torres finished fifth in the pentathlon during the first day of action at the 2012 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, Feb. 23, in Albuquerque, N.M.
Scoring 3,318 points, Torres matched the program's best-ever finish at the conference championship meet.
Torres best finish came in the high jump, where she tied for second with a clearance of 5'6". She also finished seventh in both the 60-meter hurdles (9.18) and long jump (16'7¼"), while placing ninth in the shot put (31'4¾") and 800-meter run (career-best 2:43.11).
Senior Phaelen French finished ninth with a career-best 3,216 points - the sixth-best total in Academy history. French won the 800-meter time, posting a season-best time of 2:22.18 to cross the finish line seven seconds ahead of the rest of the field. She also finished seventh in the shot put (32'2¾"), eighth in the long jump (16'7¾"), ninth in the high jump (career-best 5'0¼") and 13th in the 60-meter hurdles (career-best 10.16).
On the men's side, junior Michael Tibbs and freshman Evan McDowell completed the first four events of the heptathlon. Tibbs is currently in second with 2,968 points, while McDowell is in sixth with 2,727 points.
Tibbs was the runner-up in the long jump, recording a career-best distance of 22'7¼", while collecting a personal-best clearance of 6'4" to place third in the high jump. He also collected fifth-place finishes in the 60-meter dash and shot put. Tibbs subtracted 0.14 seconds off of his time in the 60-meter dash to cross the finish line in 7.09, while recording a toss of 38'5½" in the shot put.
In his first conference championship meet, McDowell claimed a second-place mark in the high jump behind a career-best 6'6¼". He also posted a personal-best mark in the shot put (37'7¾") to finish sixth, while placing eighth in the long jump (20'4¼") and 10th in the 60-meter dash (7'45).
Tibbs and McDowell conclude heptathlon action tomorrow (Feb. 24) morning at 11 a.m. The field events of the MW Track and Field Championships will begin at 1 p.m., while the running events are slated to start at 1:30 p.m.
