LINCOLN, Neb. - Freshman Sara Neubauer threw a 47'2½" in the shot put to blast Mary Manning's 23-year-old Academy record, as members of the Air Force track and field team competed at the inaugural Big 12/MWC Challenge in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Neubauer heaved the record-setting throw on her first attempt of the series, finishing fourth in the event. The distance of 47'2½" topped the previous program standard of 45'5½" that was set back in 1984. Until today, it had been the longest-standing indoor field event record for the women's team. In addition, Neubauer's mark crushed the Academy's Freshman Class record of 45'2½", which Manning had set in 1982.

One week after setting the Sophomore Class record in the weight throw, Kirk Devine improved it. Devine threw a distance of 58'9¼", which not only improved his personal best by over five feet, but is the second-best throw in Academy history.

As a team, Air Force provided 15 scorers to Team MWC, which was comprised of athletes from the Academy and Colorado State. The Mountain West Conference fell in the first-ever Conference Challenge Meet to the host Team Big 12, by a margin of 223-144.

Senior Olivia Korte, who finished sixth in the shot put, tossed a personal-best distance of 45'5", which is the second-best throw in Academy history. She was the only Falcon to earn points in a pair of events, as she also recorded an eighth-place finish in the weight throw (53'1½").

Junior Ian McFarland picked up the Falcons' highest finish of the day, as he placed third in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:20.43.

After clearing a personal-best height of 15'3" in the pole vault, junior Erik Mirandette earned fourth-place honors. Senior Dierra Poland finished just 0.03 off of her season-best time (9.03) to take fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, while classmate Nick Luina earned fourth-place honors in the 400-meter dash behind a time of 48.54.

Freshman Alison Romanko placed fourth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:16.94 and the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Luina and juniors Troy Jensen, John Payne and Kyle Meakins also finished fourth behind a time of 3:23.92.

Junior Kevin Hawkins took fifth in the 1000-meter run (2:30.94), while senior Travis Picou earned the same spot in the 200-meter dash behind a time of 21.86.

Senior Casey Johnson finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 36'11¾" and junior Kelly Robinson earned the same placing in the mile run, after crossing the finish line in 5:08.14. In addition to his relay spot, Meakins earned individual event points for Team MWC, with a sixth-place finish in the 600-yard run (1:15.31).

Sophomore Sebastian Ortiz picked up a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run after clocking a time of 1:56.55

Air Force returns to the Academy next weekend (Jan. 27) for the annual Don Barrett-Air Force Open, honoring the Falcons' long-time meet official. The day-long meet is slated to begin 10 a.m., with the men's weight throw and pole vault.
