JUNIOR (2010): All-conference honoree...threw a career-best 223'7" to place third at the MWC Championships...that is the second-best distance in Academy history...became just the second Air Force thrower to surpass the 220-foot mark...qualified to the semifinals of the NCAA Outdoor Championships...ranked 20th in the region heading to the national meet...won the javelin throw three times and was the top collegiate finisher in a fourth meet...threw 201'3" to win that event at the Military Championships...set a new meet record with that throw...posted four throws over 200 feet at the Texas Relays...threw a then-best 214'9" at the Texas Relays to first move into fourth on the all-time list...claimed the team's Field Athlete of the Week award following the Texas Relays and again after the Mountain West Conference Championships.
SOPHOMORE (2009): Recorded the fifth-best javelin throw in Academy history...recorded a career-best throw of 210'11" at the Arizona State Invitational...that mark was a regional qualifying distance...placed 13th at the NCAA Regional Championships with a toss of 201'1"...placed fifth in that event (197'10") at the MWC Championships...set a Front Range Invitational record with a winning throw of 198'7"...became just the eighth Falcon to clear the 200-foot mark...received the team's Field Athlete of the Week award following the meet at ASU.
FRESHMAN (2008): Placed sixth in the javelin at the Mountain West Conference championships...recorded a distance of 188'4" at that meet...recorded a career-best throw of 194'7" at the Louisville Classic...one of two Falcons to sweep the top spots at the Jack Christiansen Invitational.
HIGH SCHOOL: Four-year letterwinner in track and field...three-time all-state honoree...four-year letterwinner in golf...tied for fifth at the state golf tournament as a senior...earned all-state honors...also lettered three years in basketball...member of the 2005 state championship basketball team.
PERSONAL: Son of Jim and Jan Van Fossen...has one older sister, Ashleigh...majoring in economics...future plans include working as a contracting officer...served as Element Leader, Athletic NCO and Athletic Officer...named Fourth Group Element Leader of the Semester in the spring of 2010...named to the Dean's List....notes that "Grandma Lois and Grandpa Van are my two biggest fans"...attended the Academy's Prep School...earned the highest physical fitness score while at the prep school...hobbies include fly-fishing, floating in the Blackfoot, Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers...spent the summer serving as the Interceptors Personnel Officer during Basic Cadet Training...also working as a counselor during USAFA Sports Camps...has an aunt who is a retired commander in the Navy...member of Cadet Squadron 34.
