SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2016-17: Impacted the Academy record book in two events...anchored the 4x1600-meter relay that clocked a program-best time of 19:34.06 at the Drake Relays...ran the third-fastest 3000-meter steeplechase in Academy history to finish third at the Beach Invitational (10:47.51)...clocked a career-best 4:40.17 in the 1500-meter run at the Johnson/Joyner Kersee Invitational...earned the team’s Track Athlete of the Week award following that meet...did not compete during the indoor season.
FRESHMAN YEAR | 2015-16: Competed in four different events...clocked the eighth-fastest 3000-meter steeplechase in program history (12:11.82, adjusted for altitude) at the Colorado Invitational...competed in the 1500-meter run three times, posting a personal-best time of 4:44.68 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival...ran the 800-meter run at the Air Force Twilight Open (2:23.51a)...ran the mile during two indoor meets...posted a personal-best time of 5:19.13 (adjusted for altitude) at the Mountain West Indoor Championships.
MAJOR CROSS COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTS: Member of the squad that recorded program-best finishes at the Mountain West Championship (second) and NCAA Mountain Regional (third) in 2016...also helped the Falcons to the Academy’s first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships and the first USTFCCCA top-30 ranking that year.
HIGH SCHOOL: Serrano High School...member of three cross country teams that qualified to the state championships...teams placed within the top-six each year (2012: third, 2013: sixth, 2014: fourth)...earned all-league honors in cross country as a senior...member of three school record-setting relay teams (4x1600-meter, 4x800-meter, distance medley)...qualified for nationals in those three relays all four years...competed at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina as a sophomore...team captain for both cross country and track as a senior...clocked Personal-Best Marks of 17:52 (three-mile run), 5:15 (1600-meter run), 2:22 (800-meter run) and 61.6 (400-meter dash)...named Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior...named Distinguished Athlete of senior class...also played soccer, competing on the varsity team as a sophomore...two-year member of the Associated Student Body...four-year member of the California Scholarship Federation...member of the National Honor Society...graduated with a 4.6 weighted GPA and a 4.0 non-weighted GPA...ranked fifth out of 483 students in graduating class.
PERSONAL: Full name is Shanna Danielle Burns...daughter of Bryan and Dionne Burns...has four younger sisters...majoring in civil engineering...future plans include becoming a pilot...currently serving as an Element Leader...has earned an Athletic Pin all four semesters...named to the Superintendent’s List for excellence in military, academic and athletic performance in the spring of 2017...hobbies include spending time with friends and family, being outdoors, running, hiking, swimming, biking, skiing, riding horses and relaxing on a beach...would like to add that “I run for Christ and He gives me strength”...enjoys frozen yogurt and sweet potatoes...has two horses...used to be in rodeos and horse shows when younger...completed Operation Air Force at Nellis AFB, Nev., over the summer...also took part in the Field Engineering and Readiness Laboratory (FERL), went on leave and served as cadre for the obstacle course during Basic Cadet Training...member of Cadet Squadron 03.
