75 cadet-athletes earn Mountain West all-academic honors

The 75 honorees is the third most since the Falcons joined the MW in 1999-2000

SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2016-17: Set the Academy record in the 5000-meter run...qualified to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000-meter run...all-conference honoree...impacted the Academy record book in three events...recorded an Academy-best time of 16:04.68 to win the 5000-meter run at the Drake Relays...shattered the previous record by nearly 18 seconds to become the program’s first Drake Relays champion...earned the team’s Track Athlete of the Week award following that meet...posted a career-best 10,000-meter time of 33:54.99 in the Stanford Invitational to move into third on the Academy’s all-time list...earned all-conference honors in that event after placing second at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships (34:52.44, adjusted for altitude)...registered the program’s second-fastest indoor 5000-meter time at the MW Indoor Championships...clocked a career-best time of 16:29.07a to score for the Falcons at the conference meet (sixth)...became the sixth Falcon to break the 17-minute mark in that event with a (then) best time of 16:44.34 at the Husky Classic...recorded the program’s sixth-fastest 3000-meter time (9:43.48a) during only appearance of the season...received the team’s Most Improved Award...academic all-conference selection.

FRESHMAN YEAR | 2015-16: Earned the program’s Newcomer of the Year award...set two Freshman Class Records during the outdoor season...impacted the program’s all-time standings in three events...clocked the seventh-fastest 10,000-meter time in Academy history (36:58.06) to finish sixth at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships...that time deleted nearly a minute off of the Freshman Class Record that had stood for 37 years...debuted in the Academy record book after recording the program’s ninth-fastest 5000-meter time (17:08.82) at the Mt. SAC Relays...that time improved the previous Freshman Class Record by more than 10 seconds...ran the third-leg of the 4x1600-meter relay that clocked an Academy-record time of 19:53.61 at the Drake Relays...competed in the 1500-meter run twice, posting a personal-best time of 4:41.83 at the Michael Johnson Classic...competed in just one indoor meet...academic all-conference selection.

MAJOR CROSS COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTS: Two-time NCAA qualifier...two-time all-conference selection...two-time all-region honoree...helped Air Force to program-best finishes at the Mountain West Championship (second) and NCAA Mountain Regional (third) in 2016...also helped the Falcons to the Academy’s first appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships and the first USTFCCCA ranking in school history that year...was the Falcons’ top finisher at the 2016 NCAA Championships (48th of 250)...finished 66th out of 254 runners at the 2017 championship meet.

HIGH SCHOOL: Edmond North High School...2014 Footlocker South Senior Girl’s champion...two-time All-Edmond Cross Country Runner of the Year (2012, 2013)...selected as a Cross Country Senior All-Star in 2014...set school records in the 3200- and 5000-meter events...three-time academic all-state champion in cross country (2011, 2013, 2014)...state medalist at 3200 meters as s senior...member of the 3200-meter relay that finish second at the state meet in 2015...also lettered in tennis...member of three state championship teams (2012, 2014, 2015)...two-time No. 2 singles champion at the state meet (2012, 2014)...third-place medalist in the No. 1 singles spot at the 2015 state tournament...three-time All-Edmond Tennis Player of the Year (2012, 2014, 2015)...named AP Scholar, with Distinction...National Merit Scholar...class valedictorian.

PERSONAL: Full name is Jaci Brackelle Smith...daughter of Don and Terri Smith...father ran track at Oklahoma Christian University...has one older sister...majoring in astronautical engineering...future plans include colonizing Mars and becoming a beekeeper in retirement...served as Standardization and Evaluation NCO...named to the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s List...received Jump Wings in the summer of 2016...hobbies include reading, tennis and mutton busting...has read all of the Harry Potter books seven times...traveled to Travis AFB, Calif., over the summer for Operation Air Force...also tested water buffalo pH during Expeditionary Survival and Evasion Training (ESET)...member of Cadet Squadron 10.
