Darby Maier Honored as MW Field Athlete of the Week

Maier recorded the seventh-best shot put mark in Academy history, en route to his first weekly award.

JUNIOR YEAR | 2015-16: Scored for the Falcons in multiple throwing events at the Mountain West Championships (two indoor events, two outdoor events)...used a season-best throw of 57’3” to finish fourth in the shot put at the MW Indoor Championships...added a seventh-place finish in the weight throw (season-best 56’6”) at that meet...won the shot put at the Rocky Mountain Classic (55’8 ½”)...placed second at the Holiday Inn Invitational (52’5½”)...registered a season-best outdoor distance of 55’3½” at the Michael Johnson Invitational (fourth)...finished seventh at the MW Outdoor Championships (55’2¾”)...earned a runner-up finish at the Air Force Twilight Open (54’10¾”)...ranked second on the team during both the indoor and outdoor seasons...recorded a career-best distance of 176’2” in the hammer throw at the MW Championships (fifth)...finished in the top 10 during every meet...made collegiate debut in the javelin at the Air Force Twilight Open...tossed a personal-best 166’5” at the conference meet.

SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2014-15: Recorded the second-best indoor shot put distance in Academy history (58’9½”) during a runner-up performance at the Rocky Mountain Classic...tossed the program’s eighth-best weight throw (59’7¾”) one week later to finish sixth at the Mountain West Indoor Championships...also scored for the Falcons in the shot put at the conference meet, finishing fourth with throw of 56’8½”...earned the MW Field Athlete of the Week award after recording a (then) career-best mark of 57’2¼” to win the shot put at the Air Force Challenge...earned top-five finishes in the shot put six times in nine meets...received the team’s Field Athlete of the Week honor once...did not compete during the outdoor season.

FRESHMAN YEAR | 2013-14: Earned the program’s Newcomer of the Year award...recorded the third-best outdoor shot put distance in Academy history...also accounted for seventh-best indoor clearance...participated in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (West Preliminary)...tossed a career-best 57'2¼" to finish second at the Ward Haylett Invitational...that is the third-best distance in Academy history and a new Freshman Class Record...finished fourth at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships (55'9")...won that event at the Air Force Relays...added runner-up finishes at the Jack Christiansen Invitational and Ward Haylett Invitational...recorded the seventh-best indoor distance in Academy history (56'1¼") during a fifth-place finish at the MW Indoor Championships...finished second in collegiate debut, tossing a 53'8½" at the Air Force Holiday Open...also earned third-place finishes at the Air Force All-Comers Meet and Rocky Mountain Classic...competed in the hammer throw (166'0", Jack Christiansen Invitational), discus throw (141'11", Jim Click Shootout) and weight throw (49'3", Air Force Collegiate Open) during the season...earned the team’s Field Athlete of the Week award two times during the outdoor season...also picked up the team’s Newcomer of the Week award twice (once indoors, once outdoors).

HIGH SCHOOL: Big Sky High School...finished second in the shot put at the Montana AA State Championships during junior and senior seasons...also placed second in the discus at the state meet as a junior...also lettered in wrestling...finished first at the Rocky Mountain Classic...placed second at the state championship meet during junior season...also placed fourth at the state meet as a senior...served as captain the track and field and wrestling teams during senior season...earned academic all-state honors in track and field, wrestling and football all four years...graduated with a 3.69 GPA...member of the National Honor Society.

PERSONAL: Full name is Darby Joel Maier...son of Steven and Michelle Maier...father is a retired captain...has one older sister and one older brother...majoring in geospatial science...future plans include becoming an Air Liaison Officer...has served as Flight NCO, Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection NCO and Academic Clerk...hobbies include anything involving the outdoors/wilderness...completed Powered Flight and Operation Air Force over the summer...also served on Group Staff during Basic Cadet Training...member of Cadet Squadron 36.
