SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2015-16: Impacted the Academy record book in four events...recorded the second-fastest 1500-meter time in program history (4:22.81) at the Sun Angel Classic...that time also broke the Academy’s 10-year-old Sophomore Class Record...earned the team’s Athlete of the Week award following that meet...finished second in that event at the Stanford Invitational (4:27.37)...scored for Air Force in that event at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships (fourth, 4:27.01)...clocked a time of 4:25.34 to finish 22nd at the NCAA West Preliminary...led off the 4x1600-meter relay that posted an Academy-record time of 19:53.61 at the Drake Relays...also anchored the distance medley relay that posted third-fastest outdoor time in program history (11:32.88) at that meet...ran the opening leg of the indoor DMR that debuted in second on the program’s all-time standings (11:26.06, adjusted for altitude) and finished fourth at the MW Indoor Championships...also posted a season-best mile time of 4:48.94a at that meet...competed in the 3000-meter run once, winning the Air Force Team Challenge with a time of 10:16.28a.
FRESHMAN YEAR | 2014-15: Received the team’s Most Outstanding Competitor award...broke the Academy record in the mile and impacted the program’s all-time standings in four other events...all-conference honoree...broke the Academy’s 10-year-old record in the mile (4:44.17, adjusted for altitude) during a runner-up performance at the Mountain West Indoor Championships...also recorded the program’s second-fastest 3000-meter time during that meet...clocked a time of 9:39.20a to finish fifth in only appearance of the season at that distance...registered the fifth-fastest 800-meter time in Academy history (2:12.04a) at the Air Force Team Challenge...earned three first-place finishes during the indoor season, winning the 800-meter run at the Air Force Collegiate Open and Air Force Invitational, and the mile at the Adams State Qualifier...competed in just three meets during the outdoor season, but recorded Air Force top-10 marks in two...posted the program’s third-fastest time in the 1500-meter run (4:23.65) in only appearance at the Mt. SAC Relays (fourth)...clocked the Academy’s eighth-fastest 800-meter time (2:11.12) to finish fourth at the Aztec Invitational...added an additional fourth-place finish at 800 meters during the San Francisco State Distance Carnival (2:11.96)...set three Freshman Class Records (1500-meter run, mile run, 3000-meter run).
MAJOR CROSS COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTS: Led Air Force to program-best finishes at the Mountain West Championship (second) and NCAA Mountain Regional (third) in 2016...helped the Falcons to the Academy’s first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships and the first USTFCCCA ranking in school history...two-time all-region selection (third in 2016, 21st in 2015)...earned first-team all-conference honors following a third-place finish at the 2016 MW Championships...placed first out of 93 runners at the 2016 Colorado State Invitational to lead Air Force to the team title.
HIGH SCHOOL: Otay Ranch High School...three-time CIF San Diego Section champion in the 800-meter run...clocked a career-best time of 2:10 at that distance...finished seventh among Division I girls in cross country...recorded a personal-best time of 18:03 on the 5K cross country course...CSF member.
PERSONAL: Full name is Carina Lynn Gillespie...daughter of Michael and Joann Gillespie...father was an E-8 in the Navy and retired after 24 years of service...has two sisters...majoring in management...future plans include becoming a pilot...served as Honor Officer...attended the Academy’s Prep School (“C-Squad!”)...hobbies include cooking, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, paddle boarding and attending farmers markets...is bilingual and half-Puerto Rican...born at a naval base in Rota, Spain...traveled to eight different countries in Europe...served as cadre during Expeditionary Survival and Evasion Training (ESET) over the summer...member of Cadet Squadron 26.
