Rifle team heads to Winter Airgun Championships

. – No. 8 Air Force will be competing in the 2017 Winter Airgun Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Sponsored by USA Shooting, the championships will run from Dec. 1-3. The match serves as a selection match for the upcoming World Championships, World Cup and the Championships of the Americas (CAT).

New for this year: USA Shooting is introducing the mixed team event, which will be featured on day 3, Dec. 3. The competition course of fire for day 3 will feature a 40-shot match for all men and women. The top male and top female will be paired to determine the first team to make finals; second team will be the second place male/female pair, etc.

Last Time Out: Air Force was host to No. 5 Kentucky, conference opponent No. 6 Ohio State and No. 10 Nebraska. The four teams shot back-to-back on Nov. 18-19, at the Falcon Rifle Range. Kentucky was the overall winner followed by OSU, Air Force and Nebraska.

Personal-Best Marks: With the first half of the season completed, four Falcons netted the team’s highest scores. Freshman Sarah Sawicki, junior Anna Weilbacher and senior Brandon Spencer share the team’s highest season aggregate 1174. Sawicki has the team’s season high in air rifle, 596, while freshman Nate Peterson has the highest smallbore score, 585.

Team Scoring: For team scoring in 2017, the Falcons finished team high of 4672. The air rifle squad had a season high 2364 points, and the smallbore squad scored 2315 for the season. Air Force is averaging 4658.857 in 2017.

Team Standing: Air Force is now 7-8 and 0-7 in Patriot Rifle Conference matches. Air Force Ranked: As of Nov. 21, Air Force is ranked eighth in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association rankings.

Air Force Rifle Athlete of the Week: Three Falcons were honored as rifle athletes of the week during 2017, they are: Spencer Brandon (Kingsport, Tenn.), Nov. 20. Sarah Sawicki (East Brunswick, N.J.), Nov. 13, and Anna Weilbacher (Leona Valley, CA), Oct. 30. Sawicki was also named the Lexus of Colorado Springs co-Cadet Athlete of the Week (Nov. 13)

Weekend Outlook: The Air Force men’s rifle squad will compete Dec. 1-2 in air rifle from 9:45-11:15 a.m., while the women will shoot in the matches scheduled for 1:20-2:25 p.m. (MT). Junior women’s air rifle is scheduled for 4:00-4:40 p.m.

Finals are as follows: 12:00 men’s air rifle, 1:00 men’s air rifle junior, 3:00 women’s air rifle final. The mixed team event in air rifle starts at 7:45-11:50 a.m. on Dec. 3. The team air rifle final is at 1:00 p.m., followed by team air rifle junior final at 2:00 p.m. Match information can be found on USAShooting.org.

Following the Winter Airgun Championships, Air Force will be off from competition until January 20.
