Air Force Academy senior Tom Chandler (Waco, Texas) is one of eight individual competitors from around the country selected to compete in the 2011 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships, which will be held on March 11-12. Chandler qualified in the smallbore three-position with a 580 score at the NCAA Qualifier Match on Feb. 12, where he finished fourth overall in the match.
Chandler has three All-American titles in air rifle (first team in 2010) and smallbore (first team in 2010 and second team in 2009 and 2010). He has been honored as the team's most valuable marksman the past three years. He is also the Academy's first multi-recipient of All-American honors in rifle since 2006.
Hosted by Columbus State University, the championships will be held March 11-12 in Columbus, Ga., at the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center on the Columbus State campus and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Ga.
About the competitions:
A total of 48 competitors were selected for the championships. Forty competitors were selected from the team rosters submitted by top eight teams selected. The remaining eight competitors were selected based on the scores submitted from the designated qualifier.
Team qualifiers include the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Jacksonville State University, University of Kentucky, Murray State University, Texas Christian University, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and West Virginia University. The individual qualifiers (smallbore 3-position) are from Ohio State University, University of Memphis, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and U.S. Air Force Academy. The individual qualifiers (air rifle) are from UTEP, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and University of Memphis. The individual qualifier (smallbore 3-position and air rifle) is from the University of Nevada, Reno.
