Feb. 20, 2013
U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - (Feb. 20) The NCAA Men's and Women's Rifle Committee has announced the teams for the 2013 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships. The Air Force Academy rifle team has been selected to participate in the NCAAs in smallbore and air rifle. It is the first time since 2003, when the team finished 10th, that an Academy rifle team has participated in the national championships. Air Force has participated 12 times in the NCAA Championships from 1980-2003. In 1995 and 1996, Air Force finished second and finished in third place in 1993.
Head Coach Launi Meili, Assistant Coach Mike Anti and the team members have always had one goal -- to make it to the NCAAs. This year, that goal has been achieved. The Falcons have achieved one the most successful collegiate seasons in the past 10 years and have made remarkable improvements under the helm of Coach Meili, now in her sixth year, and her staff. In 2012-13, the rifle team is 18-4 and has set several team records and personal-best records.
The individuals selected to participate will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. ET. Hosted by Ohio State, the championships will be held March 8-9 at the Converse Hall and French Field House on the Ohio State campus in Columbus.
The top-eight teams in both the smallbore three-position and air rifle events were selected based on the average of the three highest regular-season aggregate scores with no more than one match at any given site. The average of the three highest scores was added to the aggregate scores from the designated qualifiers to determine the top-eight teams.
