Spencer Cap, this week's Athlete of the Week

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo.  Air Force will go to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the NCAA Qualifier Match against TCU on Feb. 17.


Last Time Out:  Air Force beat Akron 4691-4638 and Navy 4624 and VMI 4465 in a quad match in Lexington, Va.  The wins improved the Falcons' regular-season record to 17-8.


The top six ranked Air Force shooters included junior Spencer Cap, who led all shooters with an 1174. Cap scored a 582 in smallbore and had a 592 in the air rifle.  Sophomore Logan Ogden followed behind Cap with a 581 in smallbore and a 592 in the air rifle, his total score was 1173. Freshman Sarah Sawicki had an impressive day, finishing with a 582 in smallbore and 591 in air rifle, and finished with an 1173.  Junior Anna Weilbacher scored a 583 in smallbore. In the air rifle, Weilbacher scored a string of 100x2 to finish with a 585, and had a total of 1168 points. Ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, were freshmen Nate Peterson, who scored 584 in smallbore and 582 in air rifle, and had an 1166, and Mary Maystrovich, who shot a 579 in smallbore and 584 in air rifle to finish with an 1163.




The smallbore squad finished with a season high 2331, while the air rifle squad finished with a 2360.  The Falcons finished with a team-score season high 4691. It was the second time this season Air Force beat Navy, the Falcons are 3-0 for service academy matches.


Conference: The Falcons were host to the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships on Feb. 3-4.  Before the championship matches, Air Force shot a tri-team match with Alaska and UTEP on Feb. 2 at the Falcon Rifle Range. The Falcons won the match with 4684 points, Alaska had a 4670 and UTEP had a 4579.


In the PRC, the Falcons finished second in the six-team conference. TCU won the conference title.  The Falcons finished with an overall score of 4670.  The smallbore team finished second with a 2309, while the air rifle team finished third with a 2361.

Air Force Rifle Athlete of the Week (Feb. 12):  The week's Rifle Athlete of the Week was junior Spencer Cap.  Cap led all shooters in the match against Navy, Akron and VMI in Lexington, Va., on Feb. 11.  He led in the match with season highs in both guns, 582 in smallbore and 592 in air rifle. His total score of 1174 was also a season high.
