U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - This week’s Rifle Athlete of the Week is junior Anna Weilbacher (Leona Valley, Calif.). At the Citadel/VMI matches in Charleston, S.C., this past weekend, she was the overall top scorer on both days, Jan. 27-28. In the first match, she fired a 581 in smallbore and 594 in the air rifle. Her aggregate was 1175, which led all shooters in the match. She went on to lead Sunday’s match against the Bulldogs, firing a 584 in smallbore and 592 in air rifle. She finished in the lead with an 1176, a season best.
Weilbacher is setting the standards for high scoring on the team. She is currently ranked 23rd in the NCAA with an average score of 1170, and is averaging 579 points in smallbore and 591 in air rifle for the season. Her career high is 1184, which she set on Jan. 14, 2017, against Ohio State.
“Anna led the team both days at the Citadel over the weekend. She started out with one of her best performances in smallbore, and then improved on it the next day!” said head coach Launi Meili.
“She took her rifles and gear home with her over the Christmas break to train on her own, and that hard work is already boosting her performance as the season starts to come together. She had a solid 1175 the first day and then finished with an 1176 the second, her best scores of the year to date.”
“The second day in smallbore was one for the record books. With everyone averaging over 580, that helped boost the team score to a level to help get us to nationals. We'll take it one match at a time as the conference championships and qualifiers come up next (Feb. 2-4).”
This is Weilbacher’s third rifle athlete of the week honor of 2017-2018. She received the honor on Oct. 17 and Oct. 30, 2017.
Note: Air Force added a match with Navy in Lexington, VA, at VMI on Feb. 11.
