USAF Academy, Colo. - The Air Force rifle team was host to the 2008 President's Trophy Match on Saturday, Nov. 1. In the all-services academies matchup Navy defeated Army, Air Force and the Coast Guard. Navy finished the match with an aggregate score of 5754. Army scored a 5704, Air Force followed with 5688 points, the Coast Guard came in fourth with 5421 points.

Air Force's top scorers were Tom Chandler who finished the day with a 582 in air rifle and 576 in smallbore for a cumulative 1158 points. Kyle Phillips was the next highest finishers for Air Force. He shot a 573 in air rifle and 568 in smallbore for 1141 points. Mike Seery finished with 572 points in air rifle and 566 in smallbore for a team score of 1138. Adding to Air Force's team score was Brian Jarrell with a 576 in air rifle and 547 in smallbore for total of 1123, which rounded out the team score of 5688.

"I'm happy we are climbing up to be more competitive with the other Academies, but as we still have a young team, we still have a ways to go," said head coach Launi Meili. "Tom performed great in smallbore, winning the individual portion and shooting a personal best score. So with performances like that we are showing signs of improvement and starting to make some noise."

The rifle team will follow up with a home match versus Nevada-Reno and UTEP on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the USAFA Cadet Gymnasium Rifle Range.
