Rifle team fired their highest season score at TCU

    U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - On Saturday, Feb. 12, the Air Force Academy rifle team competes in the NCAA Qualifier in Fort Worth, Texas, at TCU. On Thursday, Feb. 10, in a regular-season match against the Frogs, the Falcons shot their highest team score thus far scoring a 4641. Air Force lost to TCU, 4660-4641.The Academy's four-man smallbore squad scored 2296 points and the air rifle squad finished with a 2345.

    "This was our highest score so far and we needed it to help the season average. Saturday is the big day that counts for half the qualifying score for nationals," said Air Force head coach Launi Meili. The scores from the Qualifier will go towards deciding the field of eight for the NCAA Championships in March.

    The team's biggest standouts on Thursday were junior Kyle Phillips who fired a 585 in air rifle, which is a career high. He also finished with a career-high aggregate score of 1159 (574 smallbore/585 air rifle). Sophomore Ben York shot a season high 583 in the air rifle. Senior Tom Chandler led the smallbore team with 582 points and junior Robert Vasquez led with a 589 in air rifle.
