Air Force Rifle Team Scores Big Wins

USAF Academy, Colo. - The Air Force Academy rifle team won both matches against The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute (VMI) this past weekend in Charleston, S.C., shooting both smallbore and air rifle during Saturday's and Sunday's competition. Air Force finished in first place with an aggregate team score of 4488. Second place went to VMI's "A" team with a score of 4314, The Citadel men's team followed with an aggregate 4308, fourth place went to the VMI "B" team (3799), and the Citadel women's team (2133) finished fifth.
During Saturday's air rifle match, the Falcons beat the Bulldogs, 2266-2236. The Falcons out shot the VMI "A" team by 86 points, VMI finished with 2180 points in air rifle. The VMI "B" team finished with 1893 points.
In Sunday's smallbore matches, Air Force out-shot the Citadel 2222-2072. The "A" team from VMI finished ahead of the Bulldogs with 2134 points. The VMI "B" team trailed with only 1906 points. The Citadel's women's team finished with 2133 points for the day.
The Falcons' top shooters were freshman Tom Chandler, from Oak Harbor, Wash., and freshman Rachael Arthur, Andersonville, Tenn., and junior Brian Jarrell, Lufkin, Texas. Chandler won both the air rifle and smallbore events with scores of 572/600 in air rifle and 567/600 in smallbore, out shooting his opponents by an average of 52 points. Arthur had the second-best score of the weekend, with a 569/600 in air rifle. Jarrell had the second-best smallbore score, 559/600. The Falcons' wins this weekend boost their overall record to 7-7 for the season.
Air Force next travels to Fort Worth, Texas, Feb. 2, for a match against TCU.
