2013-14: Cadet Higgins is becoming one of Air Force's top marksmen ... started the season against UTEP (Oct. 19-20, 2013) ... on both days, he had the second-highest scores in smallbore (578 and 579, respectively) ... in air rifle, he scored a 582 and 584 for a two-day cum 2323 against the Miners ... on Nov. 2, in the President's Trophy Match he was fourth in air rifle with a 588 and scored 574 in smallbore ... on Nov. 16, Air Force defeated UTEP on 4655-4509 ... he finished with a 572 in smallbore and 582 in air rifle ... at JSU (Nov. 17), he scored a 571 and 581, respectively, in smallbore and air rifle ... vs. Alaska (Jan. 9), he finished with a 576 smallbore and 753 air rifle score ... on Jan. 25-26, Air Force competed a double-header against Nebraska in Lincoln, Higgins scored a two-day cum 2333 ... he had the third-highest scores in smallbore on both days (578/584) ... he scored a 586 and 585 in air rifle ... at its inaugural home match (Feb. 1), Air Force was host to Reno .... the Falcons won the match 4651-4562 ... Higgins scored a cum 1162 in the match, topping off his SB score with a 199 in prone (578) ... he had a perfect 100 in round 2 for a 584 in air rifle ... on Feb. 7, Air Force outscored Akron, 4638-4616 ... he scored 1166 points with 583s in both guns ... in the PRC Championships (Feb. 8-9), he had the team's highest SB score (581) and scored 588 in air rifle ... AFA finished second in the conference ... in April, he traveled to Ft. Benning, Ga., for the ISSF World Cup Championships ... he had a minimum qualification score (MQS) that gave him a spot on the World Cup roster ... shooting a MQS in the prone position, he scored 102.2, 104.7, 103.6 104.0, 102.2 and 104.6 for a total of 621.3 ... he went on to finish 13th (1221.8) at the 2014 National Junior Olympic Championships ... on April 24-26, he placed third at the NJOCs in the 50m three-position championships with a three-day total of 2314 ... qualifying for the Springs Selction Match (May 9-11), Higgins took third place with three scores of 621.3, 623.1 and 624.6 ... his scores earned him 18 overall points toward finals of 1887.0 ... he will start the new season off by competing in the 51st ISSF World Championships in Granada, Spain Sept. 6-20, 2014.
2012-13: In 2013, his wish came true! During the 2012-13 season, the Academy's rifle team qualified for the NCAA Rifle National Championships ... Higgins finished the season with a 576 in men's air rifle at the 2012 Winter Air Gun Championships (Dec. 2) ... he set two personal-best records in air rifle (588) on Feb. 2 and smallbore (577) on Oct. 12 ... at the qualifiers, he finished fifth with a 577 in smallbore and scored a perfect 100 in the smallbore prone position ... he was the Falcons' fifth highest shooter in air rifle totaling 574 points ... on Feb. 2 against Reno, he was the runner up with 588 points ... on Feb. 9, he finished with a 586 in air rifle as the Falcons' second-place finisher against UTEP ... during the 2013 Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (Jan. 19-20), he finished with a 580 in men's air rifle ... at NCAAs (March 8), he shot a personal best in individual smallbore (584) ... in finals, he scored a 96.3 and finished sixth in the nation with a score of 680.3 ... in air rifle, he scored a respectable 580, he finished 37th overall (March 9) ... following NCAAs, he competed in the National Junior Olympics where he finished ninth in the air rifle (584); 10th in three-position smallbore (1138 and 1150) with a 2288 aggregate ... he also finished second in 50-meter prone (594 and 597) with a 1191 aggregate and a 105 finals ... Higgins also participated in the 2013 National Rifle Championships, June 1-9, in Fort Benning, Ga. ... he finished 36th in the air rifle event ... he finished 26th in the three-position smallbore and 15th (second junior) in 50-meter smallbore prone ... as a result of his finish, he was named to the U.S. National Junior Rifle Team.
BEFORE THE ACADEMY: Attended San Clemente High School ... parents are David and Pherby Higgins ... has one brother, Kenneth ... dad swam for West Virginia and is a colonel in the Marine Corps ... enjoys rock climbing, surfing and sailing. ATHLETICS: Earned varsity letters in soccer (freshman and sophomore year) and track and field (sophomore year) ... earned his civilian distinguished rifleman badge his junior year. ACADEMY: Intended major is operations research ... currently in Cadet Squadron 03 - Dogs of War ... he also wants to become an operations research analyst for the Air Force.
