2014 National JOSC Championships Close with Thrilling Smallbore Final
The 50m Three-Position competition, April 24-26.
2013-14 Outlook: Cadet Higgins would like to see his team and himself go to the NCAA Championships all four years ... in 2013, his wish came true! During the 2012-13 season, the Academy's rifle team qualified for the NCAA Rifle National Championships ... Higgins finished the season with a 576 in men's air rifle at the 2012 Winter Air Gun Championships (Dec. 2) ... he set two personal-best records in air rifle (588) on Feb. 2 and smallbore (577) on Oct. 12 ... at the qualifiers, he finished fifth with a 577 in smallbore and scored a perfect 100 in the smallbore prone position ... he was the Falcons' fifth highest shooter in air rifle totaling 574 points ... on Feb. 2 against Reno, he was the runner up with 588 points ... on Feb. 9, he finished with a 586 in air rifle as the Falcons' second-place finisher against UTEP ... during the 2013 Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (Jan. 19-20), he finished with a 580 in men's air rifle ... at NCAAs (March 8), he shot a personal best in individual smallbore (584) ... in finals, he scored a 96.3 and finished sixth in the nation with a score of 680.3 ... in air rifle, he scored a respectable 580, he finished 37th overall (March 9) ... following NCAAs, he competed in the National Junior Olympics where he finished ninth in the air rifle (584); 10th in three-position smallbore (1138 and 1150) with a 2288 aggregate ... he also finished second in 50-meter prone (594 and 597) with a 1191 aggregate and a 105 finals ... Higgins also participated in the 2013 National Rifle Championships, June 1-9, in Fort Benning, Ga. ... he finished 36th in the air rifle event ... he finished 26th in the three-position smallbore and 15th (second junior) in 50-meter smallbore prone ... as a result of his finish, he was named to the U.S. National Junior Rifle Team.
BEFORE THE ACADEMY: Attended San Clemente High School ... parents are David and Pherby Higgins ... has one brother, Kenneth ... dad swam for West Virginia and is a colonel in the Marine Corps ... enjoys rock climbing, surfing and sailing. ATHLETICS: Earned varsity letters in soccer (freshman and sophomore year) and track and field (sophomore year) ... earned his civilian distinguished rifleman badge his junior year. ACADEMY: Intended major is operations research ... currently in Cadet Squadron 03 - Dogs of War ... he also wants to become an operations research analyst for the Air Force.
