AF fencers struggled to make top spots at the '05 NAC
Air Force Academy fencers struggled to make it into any top spot at the 2005 North American Cup in Pittsburg, Pa., last weekend. The Falcons traveled to Pennsylvania for the NAC Division I tournament, Dec. 9-11. Junior Jason Stockdale was the Falcons' top finisher in the men's epee division. Stockdale, a Lansdowre, Pa. native, finished 25th among 199 competitors. Freshman Kai Anthony followed in 33rd place, which is a season-best finish in his NAC competition. Anthony is one of three Falcons to receive an automatic qualification to the 2006 Junior Olympic Championship in February. Senior Jackson Raines finished in 34th place and sophomore Adam Schenk finished 58th.
In the women's competition, sophomores Eliza Enyart, from Bend, Ore. finished 57th, while Brynn Thoreson of Littleton, Colo., finished 96th among 107 competitors in women's epee. Enyart also received an automatic qualification to the Junior Olympics. Freshman Dale Hargis will also compete in the Junior Olympics, Feb. 17-20 in Hartford, Ct. "Kai's finish is a good start for the freshman," said head coach Abdel Salem. "Jason also had a good finish as did most of the other guys; unfortunately that was not the case for our two women." "It's great that we have three fencers going to the Junior Olympics, I am hoping that the additional experience will help us when we compete at the Regionals in March. Without experience we will be hard pressed to make it to the NCAAs this year." The fencers will resume action on Jan. 13-16 in Houston, Texas at the NACs. North American Cup Div.
