U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. - Nov. 22, 2015: The Air Force men and women's fencing teams kicked off the 2015-2016 collegiate fencing season at the Elite Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania on Nov. 21. Teams participating were Penn, Columbia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Temple and North Carolina.
Air Force's Alyssa Hofilena, who was undefeated in the women's saber contest against Columbia, led the squad to a 5-4 win against Columbia. Against OSU, Hofilena was 2-1 and led the squad to its four wins against Ohio. Against Penn, Hofilena, 2-1, and Lauren Sides who picked up a win earned the squad three victories against their opponent. Sides went undefeated against North Carolina. The saber squad scored the most team victories 17 overall for Air Force. Hofilena and Sides were the team's top individuals for the day, Hofilena finished with a 9-6 bout record and Sides finished 8-7. In team scoring, the Air Force women were defeated 0-5. The women's team losses were against Columbia (22-5), OSU (20-7), Temple (23-4), Penn (20-7), and North Carolina (20-7).
The men's team lost to North Carolina by only one point (13-14). The foil and saber squads were undefeated against North Carolina with a records of 5-4, 5-4, respectively. Nicholas Pollack was undefeated in the foil match, 3-0. In saber, Matthew Bergstedt was also undefeated, 3-0. The epee squad scored the most victories for the team with 13 overall. The Air Force men were defeated 0-5 against Columbia (24-3), OSU (22-5), Notre Dame (21-6), Penn (24-3), and North Carolina (14-13).
The team heads to Baltimore, Md., for the North American Cup Division I & II tournament, Dec. 4-7.
