AFA fencers fail to finish in the top 32 at the NAC
Nov. 15, 2006 Air Force Academy fencers failed to finish in the top 32 at the NAC "B" Junior competition in Albuquerque, N.M., this past weekend. Freshman Peter French, from Austin, Texas, was the Falcons' highest finisher. French tied for 40th in the junior under-19 men's epee competition. Freshman Michael O'Connor, a native of Needham, Mass., finished 92nd in the junior men's sabre tournament. Head coach Abdel Salem was hoping for at least one of his six fencers to finish in the top 8 of the tournament. Also competing were freshman Alexander Brand (117th) in junior men's sabre, sophomore David Fang (119th) foil, Trenton Atwood (133rd) foil, and Chris Pedersen (194th) foil. There were 203 competitors in the U-19 men's epee competition. Foil hosted 216 competitors, while 155 men competed in sabre. "I had hoped that French would finish in the top 25," said Salem. "I know that French's 40th-place finish was disappointing for him. All six fencers are experienced fencers and this past weekend's outcome was not what we expected." Members of the men and women's team will compete in the Division I NAC in Richmond, Va., Dec. 8-10. To view complete results, please go to http://www.usfencing.org/usfa/content/view/1799/131/
