Nov. 5, 2001
Three Academy fencers will compete in the Junior North American Cup in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 9-12. C3C Gian-Carlo Rando will be competing in the Junior NACs and if he fences like he did in Santa Fe, he should place in the final eight. Ryan Dunn, who won the foil competition in Santa Fe, will also be going to the NAC, as well as Ashley Roell and Aphia Taylor.
About the Junior NAC -- The Junior NAC is for anyone under 20 years old and is important to collect national points. There are usually 200 competitors per event, and the points awarded are used to determine who makes the junior national team.
"Our competition in New Mexico (Oct. 27-28) was very good for the team. The team continues their progress and improvement from year to year and the results show. Rando, fought like a lion, losing in the gold medal bout 14-15 to his teammate, Weston Kelsey," coach Abdel Salem said.
