Falcon Open - Day 1
Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, Air Force Academy hosted day one of the 2005 Falcon Open at the Cadet Gymnasium. AFA junior Katherine Gulczynski was the Falcons' women's sabre champion. Senior Sam Bartron also captured first place in the open mixed sabre competition and sophomore Eliza Enyart was the open women's epee champion. The 2005 Falcon Open continues throughout Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30.
Gulczynski, a native of Green Bay, Wis., won the women's sabre championship bout, 15-13, against Megan Oller of the Colorado Fencing Association (CFA). Last year, Gulczynski was the women's sixth-place finisher. Freshmen Crystal Yang and Angelica Plazas tied for third place. Yang, a native of Walnut, Calif., and Plazas, from Bogota, Colombia, are both walk-ons. In sabre, Bartron, from Albany, N.Y., won the sabre championship bout, 15-9, against Alex Johnson from the CFA. Teammate CJ Baran tied for third place. Enyart won the epee gold medal bout, 15-11, against Caitlin Harris from the Air Force Academy. Four Air Force women followed in sixth through ninth place, they were Brynn Thoreson, Lydia Bigelow, Kara Thoreson and Charity Day. In the open mixed epee tournament, freshman Dale Hargis, from Las Vegas, Nev., tied for third place. Junior Jason Stockdale was AFA's seventh-place finisher.
