Nick Toth Open

The Air Force Academy fencing team hosted the annual Nick Toth Open on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Cadet Gymnasium. The Academy's top winners were junior Crystal Yang, from Chino Hills, Calif., who won the women's saber event. Junior Angelica Plazas, from Bogota, Colombia, took second place, while freshman Margo Zhukov, Little Falls, N.J., tied for third place. In mixed saber, sophomore Michael O'Connor won the championship bout. O'Connor trailed his opponent, Jeffares-Whitehead, throughout most of the match. With just a few minutes remaining, O'Connor tied the match 13-13 and never looked back, winning 15-13. Nick Bente and Brent Watson tied for third place. Watson earned his "C" rating in U.S. Fencing Association, while Bente, a C05 rated fencer, advanced to C07. In women's epee, senior Eliza Enyart took second place. In mixed epee, senior Fred Meyer tied for third place, while freshman Daniel Trapani, from Houston, Texas, finished in fifth place. In Y-12 mixed epee, Spencer Amann from Northern Colorado Fencers was the tournament champion. Second place went to Joseph Longuevan, Denver Fencing Center.
